What is Reiki?

By Delilah Scott, Reiki Master with The M.A.D. Therapy

Reiki healing is a form of alternative therapy that originated in Japan in the early 20th century. It involves the practitioner placing their hands lightly on or just above the recipient’s body to channel healing energy. The word "Reiki" comes from the Japanese words "rei" (universal) and "ki" (life energy).

Key Points about Reiki Healing:

Principle: Reiki is based on the idea that a universal life force energy flows through all living things. When this energy is low or blocked, people may feel ill or stressed. Reiki aims to balance and restore this energy.

Practice: During a session, the recipient typically lies fully clothed on a massage table. The practitioner places their hands on or just above specific areas of the body. Sessions usually last from 30 to 60 minutes.

Purpose: Reiki is primarily used for relaxation, stress reduction, and promoting an overall sense of well-being. Some people also use it as a complementary therapy to help with pain, anxiety, and other health conditions.

Evidence: Scientific evidence on the effectiveness of Reiki is limited, and more research is needed. However, many people report feeling relaxed and refreshed after a session.

Safety: Reiki is generally considered safe and non-invasive. It does not involve any manipulation of the body or ingestion of substances.
